Just scary (Original title: Creeped Out ) is a Canadian - British Horror - anthology series by Bede Blake and Robert Butler for older children, which was erstausgestrahlt in the UK on 31 October 2017 and in Canada on October 5 2018th In Germany and other countries, the first season was released on October 4, 2018 on Netflix , where the episodes are in a different order than they were broadcast.
format
As an anthology series, each episode tells a different story with a changing cast, the main characters of which are older children from around 10 to 13 years of age. The moral of the story often concerns the use of technology and social media, as well as relationships with parents and friends.
Even if no character appears in multiple episodes, there are a few episodes linking details so that they are set in the same area: the character Patty Peterson from slapstick is mentioned in Kindlesticks ; Karter Bay appears in Slapstick and The Call ; Zucco's Pizzeria is mentioned in Marti , Kindlesticks, and Troll and is an important location in Unfiltered . The technology in Marti and Hilfe comes from the same company.
A connecting element of all episodes is the framing by the figure of the miracle and the narrator.
Narrator and the wonder
Each episode begins with the mysterious character Der Wunderling (in the original "The Curious", in German "The inquisitive"), a boy who wears a white mask and hood. A narrator (in the original Aurora Aksnes , in the German dubbing Sarah Alles ) speaks about it:
“The miracle… it is said that he collects mysterious stories and you hear him whistle, then something sinister is about to happen.
Nobody knows where he comes from and where it is going. "
Further subsequent sentences are adapted differently to the respective episode. In it, the narrator also addresses the viewer. At the end of the episode, the marvel reappears and collects the story by packing an item from it as a souvenir and taking it with him. In some episodes of the second season, he does not wrap the item, but uses it at the location of the action. In the final comment, the narrator draws a conclusion and asks questions again.
Bede Blake explained that the marvel's character was designed to develop into an urban legend . They wanted children to talk and speculate about what might be under the mask. “As for the plot, he's not a threat to the children. It got its name because it is naturally curious. He is not someone who wants to harm others. He is an observer. "

Inspirations
Simply uncanny is often compared to current as well as older anthology series, the latter of which had an influence on the creators of the series: Bede Blake names Steven Spielberg and his series Incredible Stories as a great inspiration . Robert Butler said of Spielberg that they initially wanted "some kind of spell, some kind of Spielberg's spell, more than straightforward horror," and attributed the Incredible Stories and the Twilight Zone to influencing their series. Butler also lists other anthology and horror series from the 1990s: Horror, Horror, Goosebumps , Goosebumps - The Hour of the Ghosts , Eerie, Indiana and Total Twist - An Australian family starts : “All of these series took themselves very seriously, which was very was exciting. There was no wink at the audience, you weren't pulled out, you were in the moment. It's something you don't often get on children's television. "The Twilight Zone was the inspiration for the element of framing by the Wunderling:" We always wanted a very dense kind of Rod Serling intro that got you into the story - then you were gone - who then came back at the end to tease us a little. That's where the wonder comes from. "
Designations
- The Denis McGrath High school in the episode Marti was named after the screenwriter of the episode No Fear , who died during the production of the first season. Bede Blake said: "That was a little homage to Denis, a dedication to make him part of the legacy of this world."
- In the episode Cat Food , the children are named Stewart (Stu) and Kelly after the actors James Stewart and Grace Kelly in The Window to the Courtyard , in which neighbors in the house opposite are also observed through a window.
- In the episode Spaceman , the children are named Henry and Thomas after the actor Henry Thomas who played the leading role in ET - The Extra Terrestrial of Spielberg, in which the boy Eliott finds an alien who wants to contact his home country ("phone home").
production
The idea for Simply Weird was developed by Blake and Butler in 2014. The series is a co-production by UK CBBC and Canadian DHX Media that gave creators the freedom to promote whatever they like. Episodes in the series were filmed in both the UK and Kanda.
