Population development
It is estimated that up to 10,000 people lived in the Roman settlement Vicus bonnensis as early as the 2nd and 3rd centuries. After the franc incursion in 274, the importance of the place declined. In the Middle Ages Bonn only had a few thousand inhabitants, the population grew only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. With the status of the royal seat of the Cologne electors from 1597, population growth accelerated. The population increased from 4,000 in 1620 to 13,000 in 1784.
After the conquest by French troops in 1794, most of the members of the court and with them a large number of residents left the city with the elector. In addition, the still young university was closed. The population fell to 8,219 by 1808. It was not until the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century that the city's population grew faster again. In 1834 only 12,542 people lived in the city, by 1900 there were already 50,000.
On April 1, 1904, Dottendorf (1895 = 1,027 inhabitants), Endenich (1895 = 3,862 inhabitants), Kessenich (1895 = 4,579 inhabitants) and Poppelsdorf (1895 = 6,773 inhabitants) were incorporated into the city of Bonn. In the census of December 1, 1905, 81,996 people were identified. In 1934 the population of the city of Bonn exceeded 100,000, making it a major city .
The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . When the war ended on March 9, 1945 with the invasion of Bonn by US troops, 30 percent of the houses were in ruins and more than 4,000 Bonn residents had lost their lives as a result of bomb attacks or as soldiers in combat operations. On May 28, 1945 British troops took over the city as an army of occupation. The population fell in the course of the war from 101,000 in May 1939 to 43,000 in April 1945.
The return of the evacuees and the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern regions caused the population to rise rapidly. As early as 1947, as many people were living in the city as before the war. As a result of the incorporation of Bad Godesberg (1967 = 74,853 inhabitants), Beuel (1967 = 35,034 inhabitants) and other places, the population more than doubled on August 1, 1969 by 162,400 people to around 300,000.
The move to the government resulted in a slight population decline between 1992 and 1995, which was quickly compensated for. In 1996 the number of 300,000 inhabitants was exceeded for the first time. Bonn is one of the medium-sized cities and one of the ten largest cities in North Rhine-Westphalia and is a regional center . At the end of 2011, the city with 327,913 inhabitants ranked 18th among German cities and 9th within North Rhine-Westphalia.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1815 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.

After Berlin took over the functions of a federal capital, it was initially assumed that the population would decline. During the time as a federal city, Bonn could not meet this fear, as numerous institutions were settled as compensation and some of the ministries remained in Bonn. In addition, the number of students also rose, although they are not always registered with the registration authorities at the university location or are only registered here as second homes.
Population projections
The State Office for Information and Technology in North Rhine-Westphalia regularly prepares population forecasts for cities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to these figures, Bonn has the second largest population growth in North Rhine-Westphalia after Münster and is one of the ten cities and districts among the 53 for which growth is forecast at all
forecast | Population 2030 |
---|---|
2009 | 353,600 |
2012 | 362.100 |
In their 2006 “Guide to Demographic Change 2020”, in which the Bertelsmann Foundation provides data on the development of the population of 2,959 municipalities in Germany, a population increase of 4.5 percent (13,905 people) is predicted for Bonn between 2003 and 2020 .
Absolute population development 2012–2030 - forecast for Bonn (main residences):
A succession forecast was published in 2011. As with all major German cities, this provides for a higher population path.
It should be noted, however, that according to ZENSUS 2011, Bonn's population of 307,530 has been revised downwards very significantly. If one follows the forecast of the Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR), according to which Bonn's population will increase by 3.3% between 2012 and 2025, this would then be around approx. 318,000 (plus approx. 10,000).
