Meiningen had an average of 2,000 inhabitants in the Middle Ages and, with today's low population, was one of the larger cities in the bishopric of Würzburg . In 1153 Meiningen was granted jurisdiction , was first mentioned as a city in 1230 and in 1344 received expanded city rights such as the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt . In 1545 there were 2,200 people living in the city. The number rose to 4,800 by 1634 due to an economic boom. During the Thirty Years War , the population decimated to 1,300 within a few years through death and displacement. The city could not recover from these effects until the 19th century. In 1680 only around 2,000 people lived in the city when Meiningen was elevated to the status of capital and residence . It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that the population exceeded 5,000 and, thanks to the development of a modest economy and the function of the capital, it continued to grow up to 22,305 in 1939. In the Second World War, the population rose to an estimated 30,000 by citizens from large cities who sought protection from bombings in Meiningen.

In 1947, 25,345 people lived in Meiningen, including many refugees from eastern Germany. The population fell again rapidly when, after the establishment of the Soviet Army and the seizure of power by the SED, many business people and long-established Meiningen families left the city for West Germany. After the founding of the GDR, the number of inhabitants rose again slightly due to increased birth rates and industrial settlements. The population peaked in 1983 with 25,905 (main residence).

After German reunification , Meiningen lost around 4,000 inhabitants in the 1990s with the sudden loss of thousands of jobs and the resulting emigration, due to a decline in the birth rate and suburbanization .

From 2000

Around the year 2000 the population stabilized somewhat, only to fall again by around 1,700 from the beginning of the 2000s. The reasons were relocations due to a still lack of jobs and a high excess of deaths over births. Due to the recent increase in the number of jobs and the associated increased influx, slightly increasing birth rates and the influx of retirees who choose the former residence as their retirement home, the number of residents stabilized from 2009 and increased again from 2011 ( without incorporations). Since there will be far more arrivals than departures from 2010 onwards, the surplus of deaths compared to births has been more than offset. The population has remained stable with slight fluctuations since 2016. On December 31, 2011, 21,131 citizens lived with their main residence in Meiningen; on December 31, 2018, there were 21,575 citizens. With secondary residence, the city had 22,395 inhabitants in 2011 and 22,404 in 2017.

2019

After the incorporation of four neighboring towns in 2019, the population increased to 25,183. 77% of them lived in the city center and 23% in the districts. With a share of 7.47% of the total population, 1,882 foreigners from 83 nations were resident in the city. Meiningen had a total of 26,335 inhabitants with secondary residence.
