Prostřední Žleb (German Mittelgrund , Czech until 1949: Prostřední Grunt ) is a district of Děčín in the Czech Republic .
geography
Geographical location
The small town is located on the left bank of the Elbe north of Děčín in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains .
Neighboring communities
On the opposite bank of the Elbe is the small Děčín district Loubí ( arbor ) with the small group of houses Podskalí ( rattles ). To the south, in the neighboring Horní Žleb ( Obergrund ), is the Prostřední Žleb train station . To the west lies the Jalůvčí district .
history
The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1579. In Mittelgrund, woodcutters , boatmen and shipbuilders used to live . At the beginning of the 20th century, Mittelgrund was a popular excursion destination.
On June 15, 1939, there was a serious railway accident at Mittelgrund station . According to the disregard of a signal by the engine driver of the D 148 of Berlin over Prague after Bratislava of the leading train to quickly when he via a switch to a different track has been deflected. The train derailed and destroyed a signal box . 14 people died, 26 were also injured.
