The Tichy ice cream parlor on Reumannplatz in Vienna's 10th district of Favoriten opposite the Amalienbad is known for its patented ice cream dumplings .

history

The ice cream parlor was founded by Kurt Tichy senior in 1952 in a cellar in Simmering , Vienna's 11th district. From there, he and his wife initially supplied allotment gardeners with ice cream. In 1955, Tichy moved his business to the current restaurant at Reumannplatz 13, on the corner of Rotenhofgasse. This is where the famous ice cream dumplings were made for the first time. The business premises were constantly being expanded. In 1992, Kurt Tichy junior took over the salon.

Long lines of customers form when the season opens in March or on peak days. In the high season, the salon has up to 10,000 customers a day, who are supplied with ice by 70 employees. There is also a café garden in front of the restaurant, which is very popular in summer.

In 2004 Kurt-Tichy-Gasse was named after Tichy senior in Favoriten .

Tichy's ice cream dumplings

The specialty of “Vienna's most famous ice cream parlor” are the ice cream dumplings that Kurt Tichy senior developed and patented in 1967. The apricot is coated with vanilla ice cream instead of dough, and the dumplings are then rolled in nut chips instead of crumbs. Initially, the product met with little interest from customers, but after a few years demand exploded. In 1967 the dumplings were made by hand, now one machine takes over the production of 35,000 dumplings a week. They make up a third of Tichy's sales. Other ice cream parlors imitated the ice cream dumplings, but they are no longer allowed to be called that there since Tichy won a lawsuit with the Unilever group . Tichy's apricot dumplings made from ice cream became known nationwide.
