Ekinözü ( Kurdish Celâ , until 1983 Cela ) is a city and a district in the province of Kahramanmaraş in Turkey . The city has 12,526 inhabitants. The majority of the population are Alevi Kurds (Sinemillî tribe), many of whom fled to Central Europe as political refugees after 1978. The district of Ekinözü is located in the middle of the province and has existed since 1991. Before that, Ekinözü was part of the district of Elbistan .
The region is also known for clashes between the Turkish military and the PKK . Since 1978, several villages in Ekinözü have been burned down and their inhabitants displaced, for example in Çiftlikköy . These purges of the individual villages were justified by the fact that members of the PKK were staying in the region. However, the civilians suffered from the village purges .
Ekinözü is one of the westernmost cities of the claimed Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Turkey. According to the media , the AKP has been planning to implement a strict policy of assimilation to the Alevis living there in Ekinözü since January 2016 .
