Türkoğlu (until 1960 Eloğlu ) refers to a city and a district in the province of Kahramanmaraş in Turkey . The city of Türkoğlu has almost 15,000 inhabitants. Since a regional reform in 2014, the municipality (Belediye) has the same area as the district of the same name (İlçe). All previous villages (Köy) have now become 44 districts (Mahalle) of the municipality. Türkoğlu County is in the south of the province and borders Gaziantep and Osmaniye . The distance to the provincial capital is 26 km. Türkoğlu lies on the edge of an agricultural plain at 480 m above sea level. In the northeast of the city there is a hilly landscape.
The history of the place goes back 160 years. Türkoğlu was a village until 1944 when it was elevated to a Nahiye . In February 1960 the name Eloğlu was changed to Türkoğlu and declared a district in April 1960. Today the city has the status of a municipality . Türkoğlu is connected to the rail network and has a train station.
The current name of the place means "son of the Turk". The earlier name (Eloğlu) meant "son of the stranger". Kurds refer to the place as the “son of the Kurds” (Kurdish pronunciation: Kirdoxlî). The renaming from Eloğlu to Türkoğlu was based on the personal suggestion of Adnan Menderes .
In the village of Hacıbebek, about six kilometers southeast of the county seat, the late Hittite stele of Hacıbebekli was found in 1911 by the British archaeologist Johnh Garstang , which is now in the Adana Archaeological Museum . In the lake Gavur Gölü , about eight kilometers south of the city, the skeleton of a mammoth was found, which is exhibited today in the Archaeological Museum Kahramanmaraş .
