Ekkehard Huebschmann

Ekkehard Hübschmann (* 1957) is a German ethnologist , historian and genealogist .

Life

After a school career in Sparneck , Münchberg , Gefrees , Nuremberg and Hamburg , Hübschmann studied ethnology and philosophy at the University of Bayreuth . In his master's thesis, he asked what, from today's perspective, can be understood by megalithism in Southeast Asia ? As part of this work he visited Asia for the first time.

His professional activity at the University of Bayreuth in two research projects deepened his scientific thinking. Heinrich Zschokke's (1771–1848) project, The Correspondence , familiarized him with the science of editing and the authentic and annotated transmission of handwritten letters from the 19th century. In the linguistic project Sprachatlas für Nordost-Bayern , for which he worked as an explorer for several years , he got to know German dialectology . He recognized the need to document the professional terms and work processes of the hand weavers in northeast Upper Franconia, western Bohemia and in the Saxon Vogtland, as long as contemporary witnesses could still report on them. He dedicated his doctoral thesis to this task, which initially followed the methods of language atlases and oral history . With the supervision of his doctoral supervisor Gerd Spittler , his research area ethnology was added to the work as a central approach. All work processes as well as the organization of the work in the families are described from the perspective of the hand weavers as acting persons in the sense of Max Weber . The dissertation submitted in 2004 in the field of ethnology at the University of Bayreuth combines the ethnology of work with German dialectology (linguistic linguistics) in an interdisciplinary manner.

Since 1990 - initially as part of the Bayreuth history workshop and the history of the Jewish Bayreuthers from 1759–1945 - Hübschmann has devoted himself to a second major research project, the study of Franconian-Jewish history in modern times . Central topics are emancipation in the early 19th century, emigration , Nazi persecution of Jews , deportation , commemoration of the victims, reparations and compensation and family history.

In June 2007, Hübschmann started his own business as a freelance researcher in the fields of genealogy , family history, transcription of texts in old German script ( Kurrent ) and historical research. Since then he has carried out numerous genealogical and historical projects, mainly in Germany, Poland and Bohemia. Since 2008 he has been on conference and research trips to Poland, France and Israel, but above all to the USA. Since 2012 he has lectured at the conferences of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies . He is a member of the International German Genealogy Partnership.

As with his dissertation, Hübschmann is also guided in the research projects by the conviction that the focus must be on people. He considers genealogical research for the purpose of determining biographical data to be essential, but family history goes beyond that. It is important to find out and present as much as possible about the lives of individuals.
