El hijo fingido (English: "the wrong son") is a Zarzuela (original name: "comedia lírica") in a prologue and two acts by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo based on a Spanish libretto by Jesús Maria de Arozamena and Victoria Kamhi based on a comedy by Lope de Vega . It premiered on December 5, 1964 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.

layout

The music evokes the atmosphere of the Spanish Renaissance, the so-called "Golden Age". At least one number is based on a guitar piece by the composer Gaspar Sanz . The music is light and catchy. It contains allusions to other zarzuelas such as Amadeo Vives ' Doña Francisquita and La villana or Gerónimo Giménez ' La tempranica. Nevertheless, Rodrigo's style is unmistakable.

Work history

Although Joaquín Rodrigo composed a number of stage works, El hijo fingido is his only contribution to the genre of Zarzuela . It is based on the comedies ¿De cuándo acá nos vino? and Los ramilletes de Madrid by the Spanish poet Lope de Vega . The librettists Jesús Maria de Arozamena and Victoria Kamhi left the place and time of the plot unchanged. Rodrigo wrote the composition between 1955 and 1960. It was premiered on December 5, 1964 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela .
