Elba Ramalho (born August 17, 1951 in Conceição , Paraíba ) is a Brazilian singer and songwriter who occasionally worked as an actress . Their music combines elements of forró , traditional music from northeastern Brazil , with ballads , rock music , samba and North American blues . She has already won the Latin Grammy four times.

biography

The Ramalho family moved from Conceição to Campina Grande in 1962 . Elba was inspired to music from her father at an early age. In 1968 she started playing drums and became a member of the women's band As Basas . In 1974 she moved to Rio de Janeiro , where she took part in musicals . Ramalho toured Brazil with the independent theater group "Chegança". The group performed experimental pieces in which elements by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill were used. Ramalho got her first film role in 1976 in the drama Trem Fantasma and also in the following years she held supporting roles in the films Morte e Vida Severina (1977) and República dos Assasinos (1979); in between she occupied a role in the piece A ópera do malandro (1978) initiated by Chico Buarque . Her performance of "O meu amor" with Marieta Severo brought her her first record deal with the CBS . She worked with many internationally known Brazilian artists, among them Alceu Valença , Geraldo Azevedo and her cousin Zé Ramalho .
