Elderson Uwa Echiéjilé (born January 20, 1988 in Benin City ) is a Nigerian football player .
Career
In the club
Echiéjilé started playing soccer at Pepsi Football Academy before the left-footed player joined Wikki Tourists at the age of 13 . Echiejile, now used as a left defender, began his career as a striker. After three years at Wikki, he moved to Stade Rennes in the French Ligue 1 in August 2007 .
After the World Cup, Echiéjilé moved to Portuguese first division club Sporting Braga for 2.5 million euros and signed a four-year contract.
On January 17, 2014 Echiéjilé moved to the French Ligue 1 for AS Monaco . After his move to the Monegasque, he was in the team for two and a half seasons and played up to 20 competitive games as a supplementary player per season, but he failed to establish himself as a regular player. In the 2016/17 season, he was loaned to Standard Liège and Sporting Gijón . For the 2017/18 season, this club loaned him to the Turkish first division club Sivasspor .
In the national team
In 2007 Echiéjilé took part in the Junior World Cup with Nigeria . He made his senior national team debut on June 2, 2009 in a 1-0 win over France in Paris. He played at the 2010 African Cup of Nations , where he distinguished himself primarily through energetic advances on the left wing and sharp flanks, and with Nigeria advanced to the semifinals. In summer 2010 he took part in the World Cup in South Africa. Here he was substituted on in the games against South Korea and Greece in the second half. With just one point, Nigeria were eliminated from the bottom of the table in the preliminary round. He had also been nominated for the 2014 World Cup , but suffered a muscle injury a few days before the start of the tournament in a test match against Greece and was therefore removed from the squad and replaced by Ejike Uzoenyi . He was also part of the Nigerian squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Nigeria was eliminated in Group D in the group stage after losing to Croatia and Argentina and beating Iceland . However, he was not used.
