Elena Verdugo (born April 20, 1925 in El Paso de Robles , California - † May 30, 2017 in Los Angeles , California) was an American actress , who was mainly known through her role in the horror film Frankenstein's House and as Consuelo Lopez in the television series Dr. med. Marcus Welby became known. Verdugo's active career spanned from 1931 to 1985.

Life

Elena Verdugo was born on April 20, 1925 in El Paso de Robles. At the age of five she had her first role in the Western Cavalier of the West . This was followed by small roles in films such as Gallop ins Glück and King of the Toreros , in which she was not named in the credits. Verdugo got her first major role in 1942 in the film drama The Obsessed by Tahiti . In 1944, Verdugo played her best-known film role as Ilonka in the horror film Frankenstein's House . She was the last surviving actor from the film since Anne Gwynne's death in 2003. Probably because of her Spanish origins, she often played exotic beauties in westerns and adventure films.

From the 1950s, Verdugo played mainly in television series, including a leading role in the live situation comedy Meet Millie from 1952 to 1955 and in the short-lived western series Redigo from 1963. Her best-known role as a television actress was that of Consuelo Lopez in the off 169 episodes of existing doctor series Dr. med. Marcus Welby , which was produced from 1969 to 1976. Verdugo played the same role in the 1984 television film Chief Doctor Dr. Welby and in two episodes of the television series Owen Marshall - Defense Attorney . Furthermore, she had individual guest appearances in several television shows and series. In 1985, Verdugo played her last film role in Suburban Beat before ending her career as an actress. In the course of her fifty-year career, she has appeared in a total of 64 films and television series.

In 1971 and 1972 , Verdugo was nominated for an Emmy Award and in 1973 for a Golden Globe Award for her work on television. In 1971 she won for her role in Dr. med. Marcus Welby received an Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, Mini-Series or Television Movie . In February 1960, she also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her performance as a television actress .

Elena Verdugo was married twice. From 1946 until divorcing in 1955 with Charles R. Marion. In 1949 their son Richard Marion (1949–1999) was born, who later also became an actor and producer. A second marriage to Charles R. Rosewall lasted from 1972 until Rosewall's death in 2012. She was also the grandmother of actresses Jessie S. Marion and Maggie Marion. Elena Verdugo died in Los Angeles on May 30, 2017 at the age of 92.
