Eliáš Láni (pseudonym Peter Petschius * 1570 in Slovenské Pravno (German Windisch samples ); † 5. November 1618 in Bytča ( Upper Hungary , now Slovakia )) was a Slovak Lutheran clergyman and poet.

Life

Láni, the son of a butcher, attended primary school in Turiec and then the evangelical middle school in Strážky ( Nehre ; today part of Spišská Belá ). After ordination in Brzeg, he worked from 1594 to 1596 as a teacher at his former school in Strážky and then as the rector of the Protestant grammar school in Jelšava (German Eltsch ). From 1597 to 1608 he was pastor in Mošovce (German Moschotz ). He then worked until his death as a senior for the Trenčín county and at the same time as confessor of the palatine Georg Thurzo in Großbitsch (Bytča). He was one of the driving forces behind the convening of the Synod of Sillein ( Žilina ) in 1610, with which today's Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession was organized for the first time in Slovakia . There he was elected one of the three superintendents of the Church.

With his wife Zuzana, geb. Tranoscius, he had four sons, all of whom were also theologians: Zacharias (1600–1645), Daniel (1605–1665), Gregor († 1651) and Isák.

Act

Láni promoted the strictly Lutheran orientation of his church, among other things, through a Slovak translation of Luther's Small Catechism (1612), but also through pamphlets against cryptocalvinism and socinianism . Against an attack by the Jesuit Péter Pázmány , he directed the writing Malleus peniculi papistici in 1612 . One agenda for the church services remained unfinished.

Some of the sealed of Láni hymns were in the hymn book of Jiří Třanovský recorded and sung to this day; three songs can even be found in the Catholic hymn book Cantus catholici .
