Elias Loomis (born August 7, 1811 in Willington , Connecticut , † August 15, 1889 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) was an American mathematician , meteorologist and astronomer .

In 1826 he enrolled as a student at Yale University and graduated there in 1830. After stopovers at the Mount Hope Academy and Andover Theological Seminary, he started in 1833 at Yale as a tutor . In 1835 he took over a professorship at the Western Reserve College in Hudson (Ohio) . From there he moved to New York University as a professor of mathematics in 1844 . In 1860 he returned to Yale.

Loomis dealt with astronomy, mathematics, physics and meteorology. He used the latest technologies of his time as instruments for this. He used electrical telegraphy to study the differences in longitude between New York and other cities . In 1842 he first drew a weather map of a storm that had struck the eastern United States in 1836. He published numerous books, which were sold in large numbers and also translated into many other languages. In 1845 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1873 to the National Academy of Sciences . When he died in 1889, he left $ 300,000, the highest legacy Yale University had ever received.
