Eliashiv Ben-Horin (born September 4, 1921 in Sosnowitz , Poland , † June 2, 1990 ) was an Israeli diplomat.

Life

Born in Sosnowitz as the son of the machine trader Friedmann , Eliashiv Ben-Horin grew up in Beuthen / Upper Silesia . In 1935 the Friedmann family emigrated to Palestine and settled in Haifa . Ben-Horin studied law at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . From 1942 to 1946 he served in the British Army. He then studied at the University of London , where he received his Bachelor of Laws . From 1948 to 1950 he served in the Israeli armed forces .

From 1950 Ben-Horin worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various positions, including being Assistant Director from 1955 to 1960 and then Director of the Asia-Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1960 to 1963, Ben-Horin was the Israeli ambassador to Burma , as well as non-resident ambassador for Nepal and non-resident envoy for Ceylon . He then became ambassador to Venezuela and non-resident ambassador for Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago from 1963 to 1967 . From 1967 to 1968, Ben-Horin was director of the South America division of the State Department. After further activities in the Foreign Ministry, he became ambassador to Germany in 1970 , replacing Asher Ben-Natan . He held this office until 1974. During his tenure, Munich was taken hostage . Ben-Horin was now from 1974 to 1978 head of the permanent representation of Israel to the European Community in Brussels and was also accredited as ambassador in Belgium and Luxembourg .

Ben-Horin later became Ambassador to Canada in 1984 . In this position he was replaced in 1989 by Israel Gur-Arieh .
