Elisabeth von Kleve (* around 1378; † after 1439 in Cologne ), a daughter of Count Adolf I von Kleve , was the second wife of Stephen III. from 1401 to 1413 Duchess of Bavaria-Ingolstadt .

Life

Elisabeth was born around 1378 as the daughter of Count Adolf and his wife Margarete von Jülich . Her eldest sister Margarete married Duke Albrecht I of Straubing-Holland in 1394 , while Elisabeth, after the early death of her first husband Reinhold II of Heinsberg-Valkenburg on January 17, 1401, Albrecht's nephew Stephan III. married. The wedding was part of the coronation celebrations of King Ruprecht of the Palatinate , who was like Albrecht and Stephan Wittelsbacher .

After the marriage, Elisabeth followed her much older husband to Bavaria, where she lived with him in Ingolstadt and Wasserburg . Stephan, who remained active well into old age and still attended dance events in Frankfurt in 1411 , also took her on his travels in Bavaria and in the Reich . The relationship between Elisabeth and Ludwig , his son from his first marriage, was less good . He refused to confirm the Wittum provided for in the marriage contract, worth 6,000 guilders annually.

After Stephan died in September 1413 and Ludwig made no move to provide for her financial support, Elisabeth had to pawn clothes and jewelry. It was only at the Council of Constance in 1415/1416 that she was able to convince her stepson to take over at least part of her debts. However, she did not receive regular payments even after waiving two thirds of her claims 1418. Interventions with King Sigismund , Ludwig von der Pfalz and Friedrich von Tirol were just as unsuccessful as complaints before Westphalian vem courts .

In 1430 Elisabeth was finally able to reach an agreement with Ludwig, a one-off payment of 12,000 guilders was the result of their disputes, which had lasted for almost two decades. After that she lived withdrawn in Cologne . Most recently, Elisabeth von Kleve appeared as the mediator of the marriage between Margarete , a daughter of her brother Adolf , and Duke Wilhelm of Bavaria-Munich . She died after 1439 and was buried in the Mauritius monastery in Cologne .
