Elise Spaeth (born on November 9, 1868 in Brennenstall ( Fürth district ); died on April 26, 1935 in Erlangen ) was a German educator and politician ( DDP ).

Life

She was the daughter of a master baker and immediately after graduating from school she started a career as a teacher. In 1886 she passed the final examination at the Royal Teachers' College of Aschaffenburg and then practiced at the elementary school in Stadeln , but soon took on a financially more promising position as a private teacher. She also worked on a temporary basis in Erlangen at the local secondary school and elementary school. In 1890 she passed the state examination in Speyer , soon afterwards the examination for English teachers. At the same time she joined the General German Teachers ' Association (ADLV), and from 1898 she worked for the Bavarian Teachers' Association founded by Helene Sumper . In Roth , she worked as a temporary teacher up to and including school provisional (administrator) and in 1901 was finally accepted as a school provisional at the elementary school in Erlangen, which she already knew. She took up this position on May 1, 1901 and was promoted to school administrator on May 2, 1904.

She organized the teachers in Erlangen and on October 21, 1910 initiated the establishment of the Erlangen district teachers' association, which she chaired between 1914 and 1926; after that she became chairwoman of the Bavarian Teachers' Association. She was also known in the ADLV as a pedagogically and politically determined woman.

She joined the German Democratic Party (DDP) in 1918 and was initially a speaker at closed women's events of her party in Erlangen the following year. Then she made herself available as a candidate in the election campaign for the first city council election on June 15, 1919 and campaigned for the establishment of a welfare office which should coordinate welfare and youth welfare. She also called for support in the education of war orphans and the recruitment of (more) female staff in schools, school administration and school supervisory authorities. In addition to the weaver Margarete Dressel, Spaeth was one of two women among the 30 elected city councilors and was henceforth active on the education and administrative committee, as well as carer for municipal institutions. Unlike Dressel, Spaeth held office for the entire legislative period up to the end of December 1924.

In June 1922 she was also appointed a member of the disciplinary chamber for non-judicial officials at the Nuremberg Higher Regional Court ; as well as the headmistress of the elementary school (today Loschge elementary school). On July 1, 1925, she was promoted to senior teacher . On April 1, 1933, she left school due to illness and died two years later. Her grave was in the Old Town Cemetery .

In 1966 a street in Erlangen was named in her honor.
