Sylvia Ann Butterfield MBE , known by her stage name Elizabeth Dawn or Liz Dawn , (born November 8, 1939 in Leeds , West Riding of Yorkshire , England - † September 25, 2017 in Whitefield , Greater Manchester, England) was a British actress .

life and career

Elizabeth Dawn was born in 1939 under her real name Sylvia Ann Butterfield, the daughter of Albert and Annie Butterfield. Her father worked as an engineer. She grew up in the Halton Moor district in east Leeds. At the age of 8, she fell badly on the street; however, her facial area could be completely restored by plastic surgery . After graduating from school, Dawn worked in various jobs, including in a textile factory and as an usher and ticket operator in a cinema . She was also employed as a shoe seller , selling light bulbs at Woolworth's .

She began her artistic career as a singer in pubs and nightclubs in and around Leeds. She turned to acting in the late 1960s and attended various audition dates for television and commercial roles. She then initially played small roles on television and worked as a commercial actress. A TV commercial with her for Cadbury cookies became very popular and gave her notoriety. In the 1970s she appeared in supporting roles, including in The Doctor and the Love Cattle , in Colin Welland's television play Leeds United (1974) and in the mid-1970s in various other episodes of the TV series Play for Today . Her role as a textile worker in Leeds United is considered her artistic breakthrough.

Dawn had her best-known role in the British television series Coronation Street . After joining in 1974, she received a recurring role as factory worker Vera Duckworth from 1976; her husband Jack Duckworth (played by Bill Tarmey ) first appeared in 1979. Liz Dawn played the role of Vera Duckworth for more than 34 years. In July 2007, Granada Television , on which the series was broadcast, announced that Dawn's character Vera Duckworth, at Dawn's own request, would be "removed" from the series for health reasons before Christmas . Dawn's last appearance on the series was in January 2008 when her character Vera Duckworth died in her sleep. In November 2010, Dawn returned briefly to the series for one scene. She appeared as Vera's ghost to pick up her husband Jack, who had died in the same armchair as her, on his last trip; the series characters remembered their love with a dance. Then Dawn finally retired from acting.

In December 2015, she made an acting comeback on the award-winning British soap opera Emmerdale ; she took on a guest role as Mrs. Winterbottom, a difficult Christmas diner.

Awards

Dawn received the British Soap Award for Best Onscreen Partnership (2001, with Bill Tarmey) and the British Soap Award for Lifetime Achievement (2008) for her life's work for her role as Vera Duckworth in Coronation Street .

As part of the traditional British birthday honors ("Queen's Birthday Honors"), she was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2000. Her services to the Manchester Children's Hospital, the charity “The Genesis Appeal” and the foundation “Liz Dawn Breast Cancer Appeal”, St. James's Hospital, Leeds were recognized.

Private

Dawn married Walter Bradley in Leeds in 1957. The marriage had a son, Graham; however, the marriage broke up after two years. In 1965 she married the electrician Donald Ibbertson, with whom she had three daughters, Dawn, Ann and Julie.

In March 2004, Dawn was diagnosed with chronic lung disease (COPD), which she had initially mistaken for asthma . She attributed her illness to her own behavior as a heavy smoker and to the fact that she was exposed to the risk of secondhand smoke while performing in clubs for years. In May 2009, Dawn became a Celebrity Ambassador for the British Lung Foundation (BLF). She also worked to help spread the word about the effects of COPD. In June 2009 she headed the “Breathe Easy Week” campaign, with which she drew attention to the work of the BLF.

In the summer of 2013, she suffered a heart attack while on vacation in Spain , whereupon a pacemaker was inserted. Dawn quit smoking in 2002; however, her lungs were now only working a third, which caused considerable health problems in her. According to her own statements, she almost collapsed as a result of her illness when she was awarded the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace in 2000. Dawn was hospitalized in Manchester in September 2017 with severe breathing problems, but was discharged on September 17, 2017.

Dawn died on September 25, 2017, aged 77, at her home in Whitefield, Greater Manchester with her family. The memorial service was held at Salford Cathedral on October 6, 2017 .
