The Elk River ( Elk = elk deer ) is an approximately 115 km long tributary of the Mississippi River in the eastern center of Minnesota in the United States . It drains an area of ​​1632 km².

Run

The Elk River has its source in the north of Benton County and initially flows south. In Sherburne County , the river turns southeast for the rest of its course and runs parallel to the Mississippi River, past the communities of Becker and Big Lake . Its name in the Ojibwe language is Gaa-biitawi-ziibi . It joins the stream near the town of Elk River after flowing through Orono Lake, which is formed by a municipal dam that generates hydroelectric power .

Tributaries

The Saint Francis River and the Snake River flow into the Big Lake township in Sherburne County . The latter is a small river that runs its entire length within Sherburne County and flows generally south through the townships of Santiago , Becker and Big Lake, and whose watercourse is straightened and canalized .
