Elmar Albrecht (born May 14, 1915 in Munich ; † November 3, 1997 ibid) was a German painter and set designer .

Life

After an internship at the Bavarian State Opera , Elmar Albrecht began studying at the Munich Academy for Applied Arts in Emil Preetorius's applied arts class for scenic and costume art . From 1938 to 1939 he was assistant to the head of equipment at the Bavarian State Opera. Afterwards he worked as the first set designer at the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg i. Br. , From 1948 as a freelance artist in Munich. After the end of the war and as a prisoner of war, he worked as a freelance artist and set designer in Munich from 1948.

Elmar Albrecht had three children: Arwed Albrecht (* 1940, † 2017); Angèle Albrecht (* 1942, † 2000) and Gabriele Holm-Petersen (* 1944).

From the family tradition as a court gilder , Elmar Albrecht had skills that he used in the development of his picture panels made from the material of the gilding compound. The relief structures were optionally covered with gold or silver leaf and then alienated. The works since 1948 are primarily to be assigned to the "Informel" style, in whose way of thinking Elmar Albrecht was anchored.

Many of his subjects refer to the mythological world of antiquity. In many pictures there are quotes and allusions to forms of Egyptian or also Greek and Roman antiquity.

At the same time, Elmar Albrecht repeatedly worked as a freelance set designer for various productions. For example, he designed the sets and costumes for Heinrich von Kleist's “ Der zerbrochne Krug ”, and he designed the set for Carl Orff's Greek tragedy “Prometheus” in the Munich marionette theater. For the "Deutsche Theater München" he designed the set for Schiller's " Kabale und Liebe " (1962)

He specialized in the restoration of old paintings in theaters. For example, he restored the ceiling of the auditorium in the National Theater in Munich , the ceiling of the auditorium in the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz (1969), the “ Gartensaal ” and “ Yellow Foyer ” of the Munich Prince Regent Theater (1988) and the ceiling and draperies of the Koblenz City Theater . In 1987, he restored the balustrades and proscenium boxes at the Wilhelma-Theater Stuttgart, Germany's only theater in Pompeii style . He realized the reconstruction from found colored, albeit incomplete, draft drawings by Ludwig von Zanth as well as from comparisons with related image programs .

In 1986, in the reading room of the Maximilianeum in Munich , Albrecht and Klaus Staps reconstructed wall paintings that had been lost due to damage: the paintings of Wilhelm III. of Orange, Gustav I. Wasa of Sweden, Cardinal Richelieu and Duke Sully . Since the original frescoes were no longer available, they were replaced by new creations that fit into the style of the existing pictures.
