Elmer Kelton

Elmer Stephen Kelton (born April 29, 1926 in Andrews County , Texas , † August 22, 2009 in San Angelo , Texas) was an American journalist and writer who was best known for his western novels.

biography

Kelton was born in Andrews County, west Texas, at the Five Wells Ranch Horse Camp owned by the Scharbauer Cattle Company . His parents were Robert W. "Buck" and Beatrice "Bea" (née Holland) Kelton .

When Kelton was three years old, the family moved to the McElroy Ranch , which is in the two Counties of Crane and Upton . He spent the rest of his childhood there - his father worked there until 1965.

After graduating from Crane High School , Kelton enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin , which he attended from 1942 to 1944 and again from 1946 to 1948, and left with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism . In the meantime, Kelton had served in the US Army and had combat experience in Europe.

He married the Austrian Anna Lipp, with whom he has two children of his own and one brought into marriage by his wife.

From 1948 on, Kelton was responsible for the farm and ranch section of the San Angelo Standard-Times for 15 years . He was an editor for Sheep and Goat Raiser Magazine for five years and Livestock Weekly for 22 years .

Seven of his novels, Buffalo Wagons , The Day the Cowboys Quit , The Day It Never Rained , Eyes of the Hawk , Slaughter , The Far Canyon, and The Way of the Coyote , won a Track Award from the Western Writers of America ; three more, City: The Time It Never Rained , The Good Old Boys and The Man Who Rode Midnight won the Western Heritage Awards from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma .

In 1995 his novel The Good Old Boys was filmed by Turner Network Television ; the main role was taken by Tommy Lee Jones .

In 1977 Kelton received the Owen Wister Award for his life's work ; In 1998 another prize for the entire work, the Lone Star Award for Lifetime Achievement .

In 2007 his memoir, Sandhills Boy , was published.
