The Elsa-Brändström-Realschule (EBRS) is a municipal high school in the Bergerhausen district of Essen . It is an elite school of sport and has a bilingual branch .

history

Founded until 1945

Today's Elsa-Brändström-Realschule, founded in 1907 as "Girls' Middle School Essen-Altstadt", is Essen's second oldest secondary school. With its aim of providing girls with an in- depth general education that went beyond primary school education , it was the only school of its kind in Essen and the surrounding area until 1921. The school was initially run jointly with the "Knabenmittelschule Essen-Altstadt" founded two years earlier under the direction of the Rector Menkenberg. It was not until 1924 that the school was given its own management by the teacher Franz Frye. After the school had its first classrooms in the adult education center on Alfrediplatz, it had to move several times; At times the lessons took place in temporary barracks set up on the premises of other schools . In 1943, during the air raids on the Ruhr area , these buildings were also destroyed; Schoolchildren and teachers had to be evacuated and school life came to a temporary standstill.

1945 until today

Regular school lessons were resumed as early as autumn 1945 under the direction of school director Thekla Stegbeck. In 1951 the school was renamed "Girls Real School Essen-Altstadt", in 1952 it moved into the first new Realschule building in the city of Essen in Bergerhauser Straße - its current location. The renewed renaming to "Elsa-Brändström-Realschule" took place in 1963 by resolution of the then college. The coeducation was introduced in 1975 - initially with 45 boys and 568 girls. The differentiation was introduced in 1978, the bilingual branch was founded in 1993, and the Elsa-Brändström-Realschule has been a partner school for competitive sports since 2003.

As the number of students increased significantly, the decision to build a new free-standing building was made in spring 2019. It has been used for teaching since the end of the same year.

Naming

named after Elsa Brändström in 1906

At the end of 1962, the Essen City Council decided that in future the Essen secondary schools should each have an individual name that reminds of a significant personality. The college at the time agreed on Elsa Brändström , the Swedish nurse and philanthropist who had become known as the "Angel of Siberia" through her humanitarian work in the Russian prison camps during the First World War . On January 1, 1963, the “Girls Real School Essen-Altstadt” became the “Elsa Brändström Realschule”.

After the girls' middle school was founded, it was initially run by the heads of other institutions on a part-time basis. Rector Menkenberg from the boys 'middle school was the first to take on this task, later seminar director Erbach from the elementary school teachers' seminar, followed by his successor Müller. Finally, in 1924, the head teacher, Franz Frye, took up his post for the first time.
