Emil Eduard Ebers (born December 14, 1807 in Breslau , † 1884 in Beuthen ) was a German painter and etcher from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Ebers came to Düsseldorf in 1831 , where he became a student of the academy under Wilhelm von Schadow . Soon he returned to Silesia. In 1837 he went back to Düsseldorf and entered the master class of the academy. With Henry Ritter and Rudolf Jordan he went on study trips to Holland and Normandy.

From 1844 he lived in Breslau . In 1845 he married Franziska Maria (1818–1901), called Fanny, the sister of the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing . After 1850 he changed his place of residence frequently. He lived in Gaffron near Lüben , in Dresden and Görlitz , and after 1869 in Beuthen. Around 1860 he renounced the practice of art, but still exhibited in Dresden in 1881 and 1883.

In the past he mainly painted scenes from the goings-on of the sneak traders, robbers and soldiers. Later, however, he dealt with the life of sailors and pilots with greater success, from which he took the material for his best pictures. He portrayed his motifs partly dramatically, partly humorous.

In the painting St. Goar, who preaches the gospel to the fishermen of the Rhine , he tried his hand at painting history. His painting The Surreptitious Traders (1830) is in the Berlin National Gallery , his painting Gathering Thunderstorm (1831) belongs to the Museum Kunstpalast on permanent loan from the Düsseldorf Art Academy .
