Emil Kugler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Kugler (born September 17, 1868 in Brixen , † August 30, 1941 in Gmunden ) was an Austrian physician , writer and art patron . He became known for his commitment to the medical and spa infrastructure of the city of Gmunden and as an author of literature for young people. He also played a role as a friend and supporter in various artist biographies.

Life

Kugler graduated from high school in Brixen in 1887 and then studied medicine at the universities of Graz , Innsbruck and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1893. He developed an interest in literature and language early on, and was already involved in the Innsbruck language association during his studies . After completing his studies, Kugler first ran a country doctor's practice in Jenesien near Bozen , then opened a practice in Gmunden in 1898 and was chief physician of the Gmunden sanatorium (chief medical officer). In 1899 he married Anna von Pfeiffersberg, with whom he had four children.

Due to the impoverishment after the First World War and the resulting increase in tuberculosis cases, Kugler opened the children's spa at Offensee in 1920 . Children with bone tuberculosis in particular were treated there with sun therapy. Until the introduction of effective drugs after the Second World War, this form of therapy remained the most important measure of treatment for tuberculosis. The good reputation of the sanatorium allowed the number of patients to rise continuously and so there were regular structural extensions. In 1935 an additional (year-round) sanatorium was built on the Gmundnerberg .

In addition to his professional activity, Kugler devoted himself to art. He mainly wrote imaginative books for young people ("Christmas Games", "House Tales of the Kugler Children"), which are characterized by his historical and cultural-historical knowledge as well as his cross-references to various legends. He was also a sought-after specialist in the fine arts. What is remarkable is his wide circle of friends of artists whom he promoted and supported in their development. Kugler also brought various artists together and established many longstanding artist friendships. This circle of friends included the writers Jakob Julius David and Peter Altenberg , the graphic artists Alfred Kubin and Karl Rössing (the two met through Kugler and stayed in lifelong contact), the sculptor Anton Hanak and the art collector Albert Figdor .

Emil Kugler died unexpectedly on August 30, 1941 and was buried in the family crypt at Gmundner Friedhof.
