Christian Emil Rothpletz (born February 21, 1824 in Aarau ; † October 13, 1897 in Zurich ) was a Swiss lawyer , officer , university professor and politician .

biography

Emil Rothpletz studied from 1842 to 1847 at the Universities of Heidelberg and Zurich law . In Heidelberg in 1843 he joined the Corps Guestphalia and the Corps Helvetia. Rothpletz did his doctorate with a monograph on Jean-Gabriel Eynard at the University of Zurich .

He took part in the Sonderbund War of 1847 as a volunteer and then took part in the revolution in Berlin in March 1848 .

He then settled in Aarau as an advocate . In 1852 he became a district judge there , and from 1852 to 1858 he was president of the court. From 1856 to 1858 he was chief justice and from 1858 president of the criminal and jury court.

In the Swiss Army he was promoted to captain of the artillery staff in 1855 . In 1856 he became an adjunct to Hans Herzog . In 1860 he was promoted to major , in 1863 to lieutenant colonel and weapons chief of the Aargau artillery and in 1867 to colonel in the federal general staff . In the border occupation during the Franco-German War he was Adlat of General Hans Herzog. From 1875 to 1883 he commanded the 5th Division.

In 1878 Rothpletz was appointed professor of war history, strategy, tactics, army organization and administration and the first head of the newly established military department at ETH Zurich . The professorship was held until 1897. He wrote numerous military science publications.

As a politician, Rothpletz was a member of the Aarau city council from 1850 to 1851. From 1864 to 1865 and from 1871 to 1878 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau . From 1889 to 1891 he was the first President of the Federal Art Commission.

Emil Rothpletz was an art lover and collector. Some of his painting collection can be found in the Schlössli Aarau , his residence from 1862. From 1860 to 1874 he was the founding president of the Aargau Art Association.
