Emil Schultheisz

Emil Schultheisz (born June 21, 1923 in Budapest ; † June 12, 2014 there ) was a Hungarian doctor , university professor and politician of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who was Minister of Health between 1974 and 1984.

Life

Medical degree and doctor

Schultheisz, son of an officer , began studying medicine at the Franz Joseph University in Kolozsvár after attending the Fasori Evangélikus Gimnázium and the Soproni Evangélikus Líceum in 1941 (Kolozsvári Magyar Királyi Ferenc József Tudományegyetis -Istvrecen University in 1942 ) (Tisza István Tudományegyetem) and finally graduated in 1949 from the Péter Pázmány University of Budapest (Pázmány Péter Tudományegyetemen) with a medical diploma.

After graduation Schultheisz began his career in 1949 as assistant physician in a practice in the Zsigmond Kunffy Street in Budapest and joined in May 1950 as a general practitioner in a practice in Budapest Fehérvári Street, before he in February 1957 doctor András Cházár - became hospital . As early as June 1957, he took a position as clinical assistant professor in the department of internal medicine at the Friedrich von Korányi hospital.

In January 1960, Schultheisz moved to the Central State Hospital as head of the department for internal medicine and in May 1962 he became deputy medical director and also head of the main department for medicine. His last position was in July 1970 as Medical Director of the Central State Hospital. In 1966 he joined the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) .

Minister of Health and University Professor

On July 1, 1972, he was first Vice Minister of Health and on August 15, 1973, First Vice Minister of Health and, at the same time, since November 1, 1973 State Secretary in the Ministry of Health. In addition, he was also director general of the archive and library of the Semmelweis Museum for Medical History until 1974 .

On February 15, 1974, after a reshuffle in the government of Prime Minister Jenő Fock , Schultheisz took over the office of Minister of Health (Egészségügyi Miniszter) on February 15, 1974, which he held for more than ten years in the government of Prime Minister György Lázár up to his Replacement by László Medve on December 6, 1984.

After leaving the government, Schultheiz took over a professorship for medicine at the Semmelweis University (Semmelweis Orvostudományi Egyetem) in 1984 and taught there until his retirement in 1993. In addition, he was involved in the National Cultural Council (Országos Közművelődési Tanács) and in the National for Regions and Environment (Országos Terület- és Környezetvédelmi Tanács) .

Especially after his retirement he published numerous specialist books on medicine and medical history . In 2003 he was awarded the Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Order of Merit and the Ladislaus Batthyány Strattmann Prize for his longstanding services . He also received the Royal Seraphine Order of Sweden .
