Emil Staub Terlinden , born Emil Staub (* January 7, 1867 , † February 15, 1929 ) was a Swiss industrialist and art collector . He was best known for his picture collection of excellent French impressionists .

Life

Emil Staub jun. was the son of Bertha Bachmann and the silk manufacturer Emil Staub (born March 26, 1831, † December 24, 1890). His father founded the Männedorf tannery and leather factory together with the saddler Heinrich Bachmann in 1864 . After the death of his father, Emil Staub jun. Together with his brother Heinrich Staub, he took over the business of Staub & Co AG, leather and plastic works, and in 1894 switched the business to industrial leather production . The department for drive belts made of crown leather (one of the most important customers was the textile machinery industry in England) was one of the leading in the industry at the time, along with the manufacture of leather car tires .

Emil Staub married Alma Terlinden (1883–1970) in 1903, the daughter of Heinrich Terlinden, owner of Terlinden & Co. in Küsnacht , a dye works and dry cleaning factory. Their daughter Alma «Jo» Révy-Staub (1909–2008) studied ballet dance with Trudi Schoop .

"Villa Alma"

Staub Terlinden's “Villa Alma” in Männedorf

After the marriage, Emil Staub commissioned the construction of a villa with a boathouse in the English country house style, directly on Lake Zurich in front of the factory in Männedorf. Richard Kuder (1852–1912) was the architect with his partner Joseph Müller . This architectural office was characterized by numerous important buildings, such as the headquarters of the Swiss Life Insurance and Pension Fund from 1897/1898 in Zurich.

The client wrote to the architects: “The exterior should be dignified but not great so that nothing is challenging against the surroundings. The interior may be expanded regardless of the public ... ». The building was constructed between 1905 and 1907. Its interior has largely been preserved in its original form. The "Villa Alma" is listed in the cantonal Zurich inventory of objects worthy of protection. In 2001 it was the location of the Swiss TV soap Lüthi und Blanc several times .

The «Almapark» on the area belonging to the villa is open to the public today. It is located on the south side of the Seestrasse in Männedorf directly on the lake and has a grotto . The statue L'offerta by Ernst Heller (1894–1972) was erected in the park before 1931.

Collecting

Staub Terlinden's move into the new villa also marks the beginning of his passionate collecting activity. France had a fascination for Emil and Alma Staub-Terlinden, which is evidenced by numerous trips to the country, but also by their preference for French painting. From 1916 Emil Staub-Terlinden began to collect works by French Impressionists , Late Impressionists , the Nabis and Fauves .

The couple visited the galleries of the most important art dealers of the time, such as Ambroise Vollard , Durand-Ruel , Bernheim-Jeune , Georges Wildenstein , Eugène Druet and Paul Rosenberg . The painter Carl Montag often accompanied her on her travels to Paris and served as an intermediary to the artists. Montag also created a handwritten directory with reproductions from the Staub-Terlinden Männedorf collection . This can be found today in the Swiss Institute for Art Research .

The main part of the collection was built up in 1916 with 17 pictures and in 1917 with another 12 pictures. Together with his wife, Staub Terlinden brought together one of the most important private collections of 19th and 20th century French art in Switzerland. As early as 1926, the collection was recognized in the trade journal L'Amour de L'Art .
