Emily Lau Wai-hing , JP , ( Chinese  劉慧卿  /  刘慧卿 , Pinyin Liú Huìqīng , Jyutping Lau 4 Wai 6 hung 1 ; born January 21, 1952 in Hong Kong ) is a politician of the Democratic Party , or DP for short, in Hong Kong. Lau was elected to the Hong Kong Legislative Council in 1991 as the first woman and was a member of the New Territories East region . She worked as a justice of the peace until 2016 and was chairwoman of the DP from 2012 to 2016.

Live and act

Lau studied journalism from 1973 to 1976 at the University of Southern California . She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in television journalism. Professionally, Lau was the chairwoman of the Journalists' Union in Hong Kong.

In 1991, Lau was the first woman elected to the Hong Kong Legislative Council and is considered a pioneer of the Hong Kong democratic movement.
