action

In 1932, the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh's child was lively discussed among well-off business friends in the drawing room of the Zulow family in Copenhagen. Eleven-year-old daughter Emma became aware of the conversation because she was the only child of her parents who suffered from constant neglect and loneliness.

While talking in the salon, she got the idea of faking her own kidnapping in order to scare her parents and finally get attention. During a trip with the family chauffeur, she disappears and leaves a note with the information about her kidnapping. In the working-class district, she meets the Swedish sewer worker Malthe, who accidentally trips over her and injures her knee in the process. Malthe's guilty conscience lets Emma take him to his apartment to bandage her knee. Although Emma was initially put off by the poor and dirty apartment, she found real humanity, warmth and security in Malthe for the first time in her life. To find shelter, Emma claims she fled Russia and is being persecuted. Since Malthe himself is an immigrant from Sweden and is therefore harassed by his work colleagues almost every day, he believes Emma's story and lets her live with him. To help him, she extorted a ransom from her parents in a very clever way, which should enable Malthe to lead a better life. She dresses him up and organizes a suite in the Grand Hotel so that Malthe can spend a luxurious evening. But the police are already hot on his heels because they believe that Malthe is Emma's kidnapper. But in reality this one is completely clueless.

criticism

“Amiable, skillfully staged film with fairytale-like naive aspects, but psychologically credible due to the sharply contoured characters. A skilful script, precise camera work and convincing actors complete the positive overall impression. A film for the whole family. "
