history

Opening and operation

The Maus Frères Holding shopping center was designed by the American architect Victor Gruen between 1968 and 1972 . After a construction phase of almost two years, it was opened on February 19, 1975 as the "Emmen Shopping Center". When it opened, the Emmen Center was the largest shopping mall in Switzerland. Today it includes a shopping center with natural light, a multi-storey car park with bicycle and moped parking spaces, a gas station and a residential building. The vision of the "Shopping Center Emmen" was unusual for the time and was successfully implemented based on the American model.

Reconstruction and expansion

Between 1999 and 2001 the "Shopping Center Emmen" was completely renovated. A third floor was added to the building and a glass roof was added. This additional floor added around 6,000 m² of retail space. On September 11, 2001, the "Shopping Center Emmen" was reopened and named "Emmen Center". The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) awarded the Emmen Center the "Certificate of Merite" for the renovation and expansion. The current center structure is divided into food (six shops), non-food (61 shops), gastronomy (seven businesses) and nine service businesses. In 2016 the center was extensively renovated, rebuilt and modernized.
