Emie Frederike Caroline Louise von Briesen , also Emmy von Briesen (born December 24, 1857 Gut Wiesenhof in Merzig , † October 16, 1936 in Noordwijk ) was a German painter , etcher and poet .

Life

Emie Frederike Caroline Louise, called Emy or Emmy, was the daughter of District Administrator Constantin von Briesen and Maria, a née Countess Seyssel d'Aix (1821-1900), daughter of District Administrator Carl Theodor von Seyssel d'Aix . She was born on Gut Wiesenhof , which her father had built on a park-like area and was originally used to breed noble racehorses.

Emy von Briesen studied painting from 1877 to 1882 as a private student of the painter Albert Baur , followed by studies of animal painting with Emmanuel Frémiet from 1885 to 1886 in Paris. She then worked as a painter and writer in Düsseldorf, where she lived with her mother and sister Adele (* December 7, 1855 in Merzig, † January 12, 1909 in Rapallo) first in the Hofgärtnerhaus in Jägerhofstrasse and after her mother's death moved to Rosenstrasse 45.

At the beginning of 1900 Emy von Briesen had a villa called "Haus Briesen" built on the high dunes in Noordwijk aan Zee , in which she lived with her sister every summer. After her death she moved entirely to Noordwijk and a community of painters and poets gathered around her. One of her students was Bertha APP Müller (* 1883 in Hehreren, † 1968 in Haarlem). During the First World War , Emy von Briesen left her house, now called "Malteserheim", as a shelter for interned German officers. Concerned about the fate of the Sisters of the Franciscan Sisters van Heythysen , who had contracted infectious diseases such as tuberculosis while working , she took in the "Haus Briesen" around 1922 , so that they could convert the villa and another into sanatoriums. This is how the Sint-Jozef sanatorium came into being in Noordwijk and existed until February 1938. Emy von Briesen died on October 16, 1936 in her house and was buried in the Catholic cemetery on Gooweg in Noordwijk-Binnen. The grave and the house no longer exist.

She mainly painted genre pictures, portraits, religious paintings and made some etchings. An altarpiece Come to me all in the parish church in Kronenburg in the Eifel comes from her. Emy von Briesen was also active as a writer. Her comedy A Famous Man was performed in 1876 in the town theater in Bad Homburg in front of the height . In 1896 a portfolio with six poems and etchings was published in the Schrobsdorff'schen Buch- und Kunsthandlung in Düsseldorf , 1904 poems The Four Temperaments .
