action

Annie Marchand has to build a new life for herself and her daughter after separating from her husband Glenn. She is completely overwhelmed by the situation, even small things are enough that she beats her daughter Tara. Ironically, through an affair with Nate, her best friend's husband and work colleague, she hopes for a new love.

Glenn has since attempted suicide and now lives with his parents as a Christian who is faithful to the Bible. He counters his frustration with alcohol. When he finally finds a job again, he believes he can save his relationship after all.

15-year-old Arthur Parkinson, whose parents also split, is in love with his classmate Lila. Like him, she is an outsider and the two instantly fall in love. Lila shows her feelings for Arthur very directly, but Arthur hesitates because he sees how his parents fare. Finally he gets involved with Lila.

When Annie's daughter Tara suddenly disappears without a trace, the whole place participates in the search. Arthur finally finds the girl by accident and finds out that Tara drowned in the lake. As a result, Glenn and Annie have a complete breakdown. They go together into the snow-covered forest, where Annie kneels in front of him and is shot by him by mutual consent.
