Enkwist joined the Russian Navy in 1866. At the naval school he met Nikolai Ivanovich Nebogatov . On May 17, 1871, he was promoted to midshipman . From June 15, 1884 to October 24, 1887 he served as an officer on the gunboat Siwutsch (" Сивуч ") in the Far East. On April 13, 1886 he was appointed captain of the 2nd rank. From April 9, 1888 he served on the cruiser Pamjat Asowa (" Память Азова "), with which he took part in the Far East trip of Tsar Nicholas II in 1890/91 . From May 27, 1891 to September 21, 1893 he served as a commander on the gunboat Bobr (" Бобр "). On December 6, 1894 he was promoted to captain 1st rank. He then served from 1895 to June 7, 1899 as a commander on the training ship Gerzog Edinburgski (" Герцог Эдинбургский "). From 1896 to 1900 Enkwist was in command of various training units. On December 6, 1901, he was promoted to Rear Admiral. On September 9, 1902, he was appointed mayor of Mykolaiv and commander of the local naval base. On April 26, 1904, with the support of his cousin Fyodor Karlowitsch Awelan, he was appointed commander of the cruiser division of the 2nd Pacific Squadron . During the sea ​​battle at Tsushima , he set his flag on the cruiser Oleg . As apparent was that the battle was lost, Enkwist moved with the remains of the cruiser Division ( Oleg , Aurora and Russian cruiser Zhemchug ) to Manila back. There Enkwist's squadron was interned by the Americans; The ships were only allowed to return to Russia after the end of the war. In November 1907 Enkwist was discharged from the fleet with the rank of Vice Admiral.

Oskar Enkwist died in Kronstadt in 1912 and is buried there.
