Gray series
The Gray series or Ensikat series was a series of books in paperback format for detective stories . The series was published in the GDR by the Das Neue Berlin publishing house , which was taken over by the Eulenspiegel publishing group after the fall of the Berlin Wall . By 1990 there were 39 titles, the last appeared shortly after the takeover. In essence, classic detective novels and stories were published. The cover design of the first 35 volumes was done by Klaus Ensikat , that of the last four by Klaus Müller . Both used a naturalistic black-and-white drawing for the cover, hence the respective series designations used by collectors. The focus of the series was on classic German-language crime novels and stories, but also crime fiction from France, England and other countries.
The series was published from 1971 to 1990 in cardboard volumes without a cover. Despite the change of the cover artist, the cover design was never changed, so the volumes have a high recognition value . As a rule, the editions were accompanied by an afterword, for example by Barbara Neuhaus or Herbert Greiner-Mai .
