The Eos was built under the greatest secrecy within three years until 2006 at the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen for the media mogul Barry Diller from the United States . The ship was designed by Bill Langan.
For the huge rig , Lürssen relied on the experience of the sailing yacht specialist Rondal / Huisman from the Netherlands. The three-masted schooner equipped with Bermuda sails has a mast length of 61 meters, the maximum mast height with which the ship can still pass the most important of the bridges crossed by shipping worldwide. The entire sailing technology can be operated remotely from the helm with motor winches and furling sails. The Eos has three pitch sails and three staysails . These are designed as furling sails with furlers from Rondal.
According to an article published in Harper's Bazaar magazine in 2007 , the Eos received a figurehead created by Anh Duong from Barry Diller's wife Diane von Furstenberg .
Furnishing
The interior was designed by François Catroux. The Eos has a suite for the owner and plenty of space for twelve guests. Not much more is known about the interior design. One of the skippers of the Eos , Captain Lucas Alexander, reports on six bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The whole ship would be like a large and quite luxurious high-end villa. Alexander is quoted with:
"I enjoy it ... I have long, unstructured hours and an ever-changing itinerary. We don't follow a specific route, but mainly commute between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. "
The crew consists of 21 men, including two cooks, three technicians, nine deckhands , helmsmen and stewards.
Largest sailing yacht in the world by 2017
Measured by the "length over all" (Lüa), the Eos was until 2017 the largest sailing yacht in the world. The Eos owed this to its not inconsiderable jib boom , which undoubtedly belongs to the ship and thus also contributes to the overall length.
With a length of 142.81 m, the SY A has been the largest sailing yacht in the world since February 2017 .
