history

Carl Hugo Erbslöh, who came from the Bergisch entrepreneurial family Erbslöh and was a son of the Barmer factory owner and company founder Julius Erbslöh I , founded a wholesale company for chemicals and minerals in Düsseldorf in 1876. He was interested in kaolin , a rock that is used, among other things, to manufacture paper and porcelain as well as in the food industry . Looking for new reserves to extend from the import of English kaolin, the so-called China clay to make independent, he acquired in 1892 in Geisenheim of Eduard von charge after mining law on clay and kaolin conferred fields Rothenberg and Becht. The Geisenheim deposits were characterized by strongly kaolinized quartz keratophyres, from which, under hydrothermal conditions, almost pure, white kaolin was produced, which became known as "Geisenheim porcelain clay".

As early as September 1, 1892, the company was entered as a limited partnership in the commercial register of the city of Rüdesheim am Rhein . Fields were both open pit open-minded , as well as in civil engineering oriented . For this purpose, a 500 m long tunnel was driven from the Pflänzer settlement to Rothenberg. At the same time, the construction of a slurry works started directly on the railway line . The first customers included the paper manufacturer E. Holtzmann & Cie. , the Thonwerk Biebrich (today Didier-Werke ) and the ceramic manufacturer Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer .

In 1896 it was converted into a general partnership . In Lohrheim in the former Nassau 1911 another mining area was purchased in 1920 was there, a kaolin plant, which went into operation from the 1921st Other pits and works followed.

After Carl Hugo retired from management in both Düsseldorf and Geisenheim in 1921, son Siegfried Erbslöh took over management. In 1934 it was converted back into a limited partnership, Siegfried became a personally liable partner until 1962, from 1954 together with his son Gerd.

In the 1940s, bentonite was introduced in the beverage sector for so-called protein fining and for stabilizing beverages, which became known as "Geisenheimer Earth for wine fining". In 1964, the beverage technology department was founded.

One of the most important milestones in the company's history was the invention of betonite activation in 1966 , a chemical refinement process: calcium bentonite, which was only slightly swellable, was converted into sodium bentonite through ion exchange , which significantly increased the swelling capacity of the clay mineral, which for numerous new applications and the development of new markets. The patented process created the prerequisites for synthetic molding sand in the foundry industry, for example, and the material was used for drilling fluids in deep boreholes or as a seal in buildings, but also in the beverage sector.

Because the deposit was exhausted, kaolin mining in Geisenheim was stopped in 1975, but the steadily growing area of beverage technology was able to make up for this loss in the years to come.

More recently, standards have been set with the production of organic certified dry yeasts (2008), which can be used by organic farms according to EU guidelines, an anti- gushing product for beers (2013), products for vegan beverage treatment (2014), and “ Halal - "or" kosher-certified "products that are not allowed to contain gelatine or animal proteins.

On October 1, 2017, the fourth generation of the family business was taken over by the French Laffort group from Bordeaux .

Gerd Erbslöh, who was a partner and chairman of the advisory board for many years after leaving the company, died in September 2019 at the age of 92. A foundation he set up in 2008 supports bachelor, master and doctoral theses by students at the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences , which support the development of the university or represent special achievements in the areas of beverage technology or oenology .

Former
Geisenheim Kaolin Pit Nature Reserve

The area at Rothenberg, created by the former kaolin opencast mine, was declared a nature reserve Kaolinggrube von Geisenheim with the number 1439030 by the Darmstadt regional council in 1993 and was intended to serve as a habitat and retreat for rare and endangered animal and plant species, and natural vegetation should develop. However, constant sliding down the steep embankments creates major problems. The site, which was still under mining law at the time, was therefore filled with excavated earth by the mining authorities. The protection status was then revoked in 2015. Plans by the city of Geisenheim to allow residential development on the former mine site may conflict with concerns of the district's water authority that the backfilled excavated earth is not unpolluted.
