The Erfurt is a corvette of the German Navy of the type K130 , also known as the Braunschweig class. It is the third unit in this class. One name predecessor was an octopus class ship in the People's Navy from 1958 to 1972 .

history

testing

The later Erfurt was laid on September 22nd, 2005 at the North Sea Works in Emden . Her launch took place on March 29, 2007 and on April 1, 2007 her military driving team was set up at the Warnemünde naval base in Rostock . With effect from September 1, 2007, the company relocated to the North Sea Works in order to accompany the further completion. After the first basic tests by a civilian shipyard crew had been completed, the military driving team took over the nautical responsibility for the test drives of the weapon systems and command systems.

After damage was found to the gearboxes of all units of the class, the Erfurt interrupted its test drives , which had been largely successful up to then, on February 27, 2009. The gearboxes were replaced at the North Sea Works in 2010, and a bow thruster system was also retrofitted.

Since mold and condensation were found in the corvette Magdeburg in February 2011 , the Erfurt went back to the shipyard.

Commissioning

After several years of delays, the Erfurt was put into service on February 28, 2013 in its home port at the Hohe Düne naval base in Rostock.

Calls

  • From February 1 to July 27, 2015, the Erfurt was in action for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the eastern Mediterranean, crossed the new Sinai Canal and participated in the operation from the end of August 2015 to the end of March 2016 Atalanta in the Horn of Africa. After that, the Erfurt will move back to UNIFIL in the eastern Mediterranean. It is to be used here until May 2016. In early November 2015 she received a sea supply from the US supply ship USNS Patuxent (T-AO-201). A total of four crew changes took place on site in both operations. On June 7, 2016, the Braunschweig replaced the Erfurt in the port of Limassol in Cyprus . After 510 days in action, the Erfurt returned to her home port of Warnemünde on June 11th. Approximately 74,000 nautical miles were covered in this period.
  • On the morning of February 26, 2018, the Erfurt , driven by the Alpha crew under frigate captain Ronny Bergner, left her home port of Warnemünde to join the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1). The corvette should belong to the association until June 2018 and then take part in the US maneuver BALTOPS 2018 . A planned visit to the Kiel Week had to be canceled. After touching the ground during a maneuver in the Baltic Sea, however, she had to be released early from the NATO unit and returned to her home port at the beginning of June.

Incidents

After the groundbreaking in June 2018, another accident occurred in the port of Kiel in September 2018. The bulbous bow of the corvette was damaged in a collision with the Tirpitzmole , and the corvette had to call into its home port of Warnemünde to collect the damage. A planned participation in a maneuver in the Baltic Sea had to be canceled.
