The Ludwigshafen am Rhein is a corvette of the German Navy of the K130 type , also known as the Braunschweig class. It is the fifth unit in this class and named after the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein in the Palatinate .

history

The later Ludwigshafen was in Bremen Lürssen - Werft laid down on April 14 of 2006. The ship was christened and launched on September 26, 2007.

Defects in the coupling system occurred during the shipyard trials. This delayed delivery and the commissioning originally planned for 2009. During another shipyard trial on June 5, 2012, an anchor was lost after the ship drifted off Wilhelmshaven . In July of the same year, toxic formaldehyde was released from the engine room .

The ship was put into service on March 21, 2013 in its home port of Rostock . It is subordinate to the 1st Corvette Squadron at the Warnemünde naval base .

Calls

  • On January 11, 2016, Ludwigshafen am Rhein left its home port of Warnemünde to take part in the EU NAVFOR Med - Operation Sophia together with the task force provider Frankfurt am Main in the Mediterranean . On March 30th the  frigate Karlsruhe replaced  the corvette Ludwigshafen am Rhein . On April 8, the Ludwigshafen am Rhein returned to its home port. During this mission a total of 523 people in distress were rescued and 14,910 nautical miles were covered.
  • On August 31, 2016, the Ludwigshafen am Rhein set sail from Warnemünde under the command of Corvette Captain Marco Köster to join the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) for three months . She also took part in the Northern Coast 2016 and Joint Warrior 2016 maneuvers . There were also port stops in Gdynia , Karlskrona , Copenhagen , Glasgow , Belfast and Rotterdam . On November 17, 2016, the Ludwigshafen am Rhein returned to its home port.
  • On May 17, 2019, the corvette Ludwigshafen am Rhein left its home port of Warnemünde for the UNIFIL mission. At the beginning of June 2019, it replaced the Oldenburg in action. A deployment is planned until mid-October 2019, with several crew changes on site. In the first rotation, the Ludwigshafen am Rhein is driven by the Alpha crew under the command of frigate captain Ronny Bergner. The first crew change took place at the end of September 2019. Since then, the Corvette has been driven by the Bravo crew under Corvette Captain Philipp Wohlrab. The second crew change took place in February 2020, when the crew Charly took over the mission under frigate captain Alexander Dubnitzki. After 144 days in action and 18,820 nautical miles traveled, she was replaced by the Delta crew in early July 2020.
  • After the explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020, the corvette was removed from the UNIFIL contingent and sent from Cyprus to Lebanon. There, the crew and the ship's doctor should help with the care of the injured.
