Ergosterol , also called ergosterol , is a biochemically important natural substance from the group of sterols (sterols), more precisely the fungal mycosterols . It occurs in the cell membrane of fungi and mycoplasma .
biosynthesis
Ergosterol is a precursor ( provitamin ) of vitamin D 2 (ergocalciferol), into which it can be converted photochemically by UV radiation ( e.g. sunlight ). This connection was discovered in 1927 by the Göttingen chemist Adolf Windaus ( Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1928) and was thoroughly investigated in the following years; the structural formula could be clarified in 1934.
A study published in 2009 study suggests that the ergosterol content in house dust as a rapid method for the detection of a mold infestation in interiors can be used.
