Eric Kim (cellist)

Eric Kim (* in New York City ) is an American cellist and music teacher .

The son of Korean parents had his first piano lessons with his mother when he was five years old. At the age of ten he took cello lessons from Tanya L. Carey . At the Juilliard School he was a student of Leonard Rose , Lynn Harrell and Channing Robbins and obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees (1986 and 1987 respectively).

After making his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen, he went on a solo tour of the Far East with the Juilliard Orchestra . This was followed by appearances with the Cincinnati , Denver and San Diego Symphony Orchestra and under the direction of conductors such as Zubin Mehta , Stanislaw Skrowaczewski , Paavo Järvi , Jesus Lopez-Cobos , Sergiu Comissiona and Lawrence Foster . From 1989 to 2009 he was principal cellist with the San Diego and Denver Symphony Orchestras.

As a chamber musician, Kim has worked with Emanuel Ax , Joshua Bell , Yefim Bronfman , Susan Graham , Lynn Harrell , Stephen Hough , Jaime Laredo and Menahem Pressler , among others . with Pinchas Zukerman he performed at the Athens Music Festival, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. As a member of the chamber ensemble Pinchas Zukerman and Friends , he accompanied Zukerman on several tours through South America and Israel.

Since the academic year 2009-10 Kim has been teaching as a professor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University . As a musician and teacher, he regularly takes part in the Aspen Music Festival and the Music Masters Course program in Japan in Kasuza, Yokohama and Tokyo. He trains young cellists for the New World Symphony in Miami Beach.
