Eric Miyashiro

Eric Miyashiro ( Japanese エ リ ッ ク ミ ヤ シ ロ or エ リ ッ ク 宮城 ; born July 13, 1963 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is a trumpeter of Japanese descent, born in the United States .

Life

Eric Miyashiro is the son of a second generation Japanese American and a Japanese woman. His mother was a dancer from Tokyo , his father was a trumpeter and in that role a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band . He also had his own jazz combo, played keyboard , double bass and vibraphone and arranged . Nevertheless, Eric Miyashiro did not receive any trumpet lessons from him, but learned the instrument autodidactically from the 5th grade . He grew up in Hawaii.

After graduating from high school in Boston , he received a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music in 1982 . After two years he joined the Buddy Rich Big Band , with which he performed for seven years. At times he received lessons a. a. by Bobby Shew , Chuck Findley , Allen Vizzutti , Doc Severinsen and Maynard Ferguson .

Miyashiro is also a composer , arranger and music teacher, but mainly appears as a soloist with a classical orchestra or with jazz formations. In 1995 he put the EM band together. In 2013 he became music director of the Blue Note Tokyo All Star Jazz Orchestra .

Miyashiro is professor of trumpet at Shōwa Academia Musicae and visiting professor at the Senzoku Gakuen Conservatory and the Kunitachi Conservatory . He has lived in Japan since 1990 .
