Eric Hans Melchior Job von Witzleben (born September 4, 1847 in Potsdam , † February 18, 1919 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

His grandfather was Lieutenant General Job von Witzleben . His parents were the Prussian Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm Job Erik von Witzleben (* August 15, 1819 - December 25, 1878) and his wife Marie Wilhelmine Franziska Sophie von Ribbeck (* August 7, 1824).

family

Witzleben married Gertrud Luise von Plotho on July 27, 1870 in Stechow (* October 21, 1850 - August 16, 1881) and after her death on February 28, 1895 in Potsdam, Marie von Elern (* July 16, 1844; † 26. June 1913), widow of Felix von Amsberg († March 6, 1879). The first marriage had four children:

Military career

In the course of his military career in the Prussian Army , Witzleben took part in the campaign in Denmark in 1864 and against Austria in 1866 . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he was wounded in the battle of Vionville by a shot in the side and a shrapnel in the head. For his achievements during this war he had received the Iron Cross 2nd class.

On March 24, 1890, Witzleben was transferred to the Oldenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 19 as a major . Initially used as a regular staff officer, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 18, 1892 , and appointed regimental commander on August 6, 1892. On May 13, 1895, he was promoted to colonel . As such, Witzleben was given command of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in Brandenburg an der Havel on June 17, 1897 . Promoted to major general on July 20, 1898, Witzleben was put up for disposition a month later on August 18 .

Witzleben was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .
