Amsberg is the name of a German noble family from Mecklenburg. Claus von Amsberg was the Prince Consort of Beatrix , Queen of the Netherlands .

Origin and history

The documented line of the family begins with Jürgen Amtsberg († 1686), master blacksmith in Schwichtenberg . His great-grandson Johann David Theodor August (1747–1820), Protestant pastor in Kavelstorf near Rostock, has appeared regularly since 1795 as “von Amsberg” and thus rose from the bourgeoisie to the lower nobility without any demonstrable nobility elevation . The naming of August and his descendants was at least not objectionable. On October 22, 1891, Mecklenburg-Schwerin received the right to continue the title of nobility. The family became famous through Philipp-August von Amsberg (* 1788, † 1871) the founder of the first German state railway, the Duke of Brunswick State Railway .

Klaus Felix von Amsberg (1890–1953) and Freiin Gosta von dem Bussche- Haddenhausen (1902–1996) married on September 4, 1924 on the Bussche'schen Gut in Hitzacker . The couple had 6 children, including the diplomat Klaus-Georg Wilhelm Otto Friedrich Gerd (1926–2002) as the only son, and later Claus wrote. The specially Dutch title Jonkheer van Amsberg was Claus von Amsberg , along with the title Prince of the Netherlands and the salutation Royal Highness , already on 16 February 1966 by Queen Juliana , hereditary for the expected progeny with his fiancee was still Princess Beatrix awarded . Shortly afterwards, on March 10, 1966, he married the Dutch Crown Princess and later Queen Beatrix (* 1938) in Amsterdam . From 1980 until his death he was the Prince Consort of the Dutch Queen. Through this marriage, Claus' descendants rose to the high nobility and became members and namesake of the House of Orange .

The eldest son Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand (* 1967) had been the heir to the Dutch throne since 1980 and carried the titles Prince of Orange (title of the respective heir to the throne), Prince of Orange-Nassau, Prince of the Netherlands and Jonkheer van Amsberg ; He has been King of the Netherlands since 2013 (salutation: Majesty ). His three daughters bear the title of Princesses van Oranje-Nassau , the eldest daughter and heir to the throne Amalia van Oranje also bear the title of Princess of Orange .

The younger sons of Claus and Beatrix hold the titles Prins van Oranje-Nassau and Jonkheer van Amsberg (salutation: Your Royal Highness )

The second son, Johan Friso Bernhard Christiaan David von Amsberg (1968–2013), was officially no longer a member of the Dutch royal family since he married Martine Mabel Los in 2004 ; he lost his title of Prince of the Netherlands , but kept the title of Prince of Orange-Nassau as a personal, non-hereditary title and was given the hereditary title of Count Graaf van Oranje-Nassau . The reason for this was that his wife had cultivated relationships with Dutch underworld greats and therefore the marriage was not accepted by the Dutch parliament. His daughters have the title of Countess of Orange-Nassau and are addressed as Your Highly Born.

The third son, Constantijn von Oranien-Nassau (* 1969), has been married to Laurentien Brinkhorst since 2001 and is the only one of the three brothers to have a son, Claus-Casimir (* 2003), who has the hereditary title Graaf van Oranje-Nassau, Jonkheer van Amsberg leads. With the exception of his father and his uncle, he is the only male descendant of the Dutch Amsberg line.

The von Amsberg family is still widely ramified in Germany (see below: Tribe list). Most of the members of the family live in northern Germany and have the nobility predicate “von”, but otherwise have no nobility titles .

There was another line that was run by Karl von Amsberg (1793–1847), forest inspector (1830–1836) in the Dobbertin monastery office , and his wife Agnes, b. Stocks (1803-1870) to Oersdorf in Holstein, descended. Among them was their son Julius von Amsberg (1830-1910), the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg State Councilor and real privy councilor . With him this line died out.

The coat of arms shows in green on a golden mountain a silver castle with an open gate, a red roofed central tower and two tinned side towers. On the helmet with green and silver covers a growing golden lion. The sons of Prince Claus bear the shield image and the coat of arms of those of Amsberg in their personal coat of arms.
