Joachim von Amsberg (born August 26, 1869 in Schwerin , † September 5, 1945 in Rostock ) was a German infantry general .

Life

Joachim came from the von Amsberg family and joined the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment 89 on September 16, 1890 as a flag junior . There he was appointed Ensign on April 18, 1891 and promoted to Second Lieutenant on November 17, 1891 . In the same year the Amsberg family was ennobled. From 1897 he acted as an adjutant of the 1st battalion and as such became first lieutenant on June 16, 1900 . From October 1, 1900 to July 21, 1903, Amsberg was sent to the War Academy . He then served again in his regular regiment before he was assigned to the General Staff in Berlin on April 1, 1904 . Two years later he was transferred there while being promoted to captain . Amsberg was then from January 27, 1907 to January 26, 1909 the General Staff of VI. Army Corps and then company commander in the 4th Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 51 . From April 2, 1912, Amsberg was briefly on the general staff of the Cologne governorate before he was appointed personal adjutant to Prince Eitel Friedrich of Prussia on October 1, 1912 and promoted to major .

Amsberg stayed at the prince's side after the outbreak of World War I and was deployed on the western front with the 1st Guards Regiment , whose commander was Eitel Friedrich . At the same time he acted from June 11 to July 19 and from July 21 to August 1, 1915 as leader of the 2nd Guards Regiment on foot . Amsberg was relieved of his duties on February 9, 1916 and was appointed First General Staff Officer in the General Staff of the Guard Reserve Corps the following day . On June 11, 1916, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the XV. Army Corps and on January 27, 1918 promotion to lieutenant colonel . In the same function, Amsberg was active in the VII Army Corps from August 23, 1918 , and then initiated the retreat and demobilization there.

After his takeover in the Reichswehr , Amsberg was first used by the staff of the Reichswehr Infantry Regiment 11 and a year later by the staff of the 17th Infantry Regiment . As a colonel (since December 18, 1920) he was given command of the regiment on June 15, 1920, which he commanded until March 31, 1924. In the meantime, Amsberg had become major general on March 1, 1924 . From April 1, 1924 to January 31, 1927, he served as the commander of the infantry school . Amsberg then became commander of the 2nd division in Stettin and commander in Military District II . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant general on April 1, 1927 . He handed over his command on 30 September 1929 and was awarded the character adopted as a general of the infantry in retirement.

On April 20, 1937, Amsberg received permission to wear the uniform of the 17th Infantry Regiment. In 1938 it was made available to the army , but was not used. His mobilization provision was lifted on May 31, 1943.
