Erich Deter (born August 29, 1893 in Berlin ; † May 2, 1945 near Ardey ) was Lord Mayor of Hamm and district leader of the NSDAP.

Life

Erich Deter attended grammar school in Potsdam and passed his matriculation examination in autumn 1911. Then he came to the Technical University of Charlottenburg and completed the preliminary examination in mechanical engineering. From August 1914 to December 1918 he was a war volunteer in the role of radio operator. In 1917 he received the Iron Cross . In 1919 and 1920 he was a time volunteer with the Guard Cavalry Rifle Corps. He obtained the diploma “General Mechanical Engineering” in 1920 and then worked for the United Steel Works in Dortmund. From April 1921 to the end of November 1931 he worked for the Westphalian wire works in Hamm, but became unemployed due to the economic crisis. On April 13, 1933, he was appointed state commissioner at the Hamm city administration and on June 19 that year first provisional lord mayor, then on August 4, 1933, he was elected as lord mayor. He was active on the board of the AG Ruhr-Lippe Kleinbahnen in Soest, as chairman of the supervisory board of Hammer Gemeinnützige Baugesellschaft and as a member of the supervisory board of the motor traffic association of the Lüdinghausen district based in Dortmund. Deter did military service as a captain in the air force. Because he refused to allow Hamm to be defended against the Allies, Gauleiter Hoffmann deposed him as Lord Mayor on March 31, 1945. After his interrogation at Harkortberg , he was deployed in the Iserlohn basin to avoid being shot . He fell into American captivity and was shot the next day while attempting to escape.

Political party

In March 1929 he founded the Freedom Association in Hamm and shortly afterwards joined the NSDAP . From September 1932 to May 1937 he was district leader of the NSDAP in Hamm.

Denazification process

In the (posthumous) denazification process , the widow was not awarded any survivor benefits. The appeal against this decision was unsuccessful because the charges against him were high according to Category III. The city of Hamm initially granted the widow a third of the pension, later two thirds.
