Josef Schlichter

Josef Schlichter (born July 27, 1879 in Schwelm , † May 19, 1952 in Hamm ) was a German politician ( non-party ).

After graduation in 1899 at the High School Hammonense in Hamm studied Schlichter law and was 1,909 salaried City Council in Hamm. Elected mayor in 1919 , he was only able to take up office in March 1920 - after he had returned from French captivity. During his tenure, the ring systems around the old town of Hammer were expanded and the tram network expanded. He also earned merit in the expansion of the Catholic Rector's School (founded in 1867) into a secondary school, from which today's Märkisches Gymnasium emerged. After his twelve-year term in office, he was re-elected in April 1931. On April 13, 1933, he was initially on leave, but on August 1, 1933, he was forced to retire. In August 1945 he was reinstated as Lord Mayor by the British Military Government . From November 7, 1945 to April 29, 1946, he also administered the newly created office of senior city director . On November 4, 1946, he gave up the office of mayor for health reasons. Schlichter died on May 19, 1952. His grave is in the Hammer Ostenfriedhof .

Honors

  • In 1946 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Hamm.
  • In 1949 the Lindenallee, which branches off from Ostenallee, was renamed Josef-Schlichter-Allee.
