Richard Matthaei (born October 6, 1853 in Lüneburg , † January 17, 1922 in Hamm ) was a German politician and Lord Mayor of the city ​​of Hamm .

Life

After graduating from high school, Richard Matthaei did his military service as a one-year volunteer with the 3rd Hanoverian Infantry Regiment in Hildesheim, where he was a second lieutenant . He studied law in Göttingen and Leipzig and took his first state examination on May 24, 1876 at the Celle Court of Appeal . After he had been employed as a court trainee in various courts, the assessor exam followed in March 1881 . He resigned from the judicial service, moved to local government and was elected mayor of the city ​​of Nienburg / Weser on May 14, 1882 . A short time later he went to the city of Hamm, became mayor here in August 1892 and held the title of Lord Mayor from August 29, 1907 . On March 31, 1920 he retired as a pensioner.

Matthaei was a national liberal , a member of the Nienburg district committee and the Hanover provincial council . From 1905 to 1919 he was a member of the Westphalian Provincial Parliament for the constituency of Hamm-Stadt .

His son Kurt was the district president in Münster and Lüneburg.
