Erich Hödl

Erich Hödl (born May 11, 1940 in Breitenfeld ) is an Austrian economist and was rector of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the Technical University of Graz .

Life

After completing his technical secondary education in Graz, Hödl studied mathematics at the École des Arts et Metiers Paris from 1962 and worked on French aircraft development. From 1963 to 1968 he completed his diploma and doctorate at the University of World Trade in Vienna and from 1966 to 1968 he was at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. In 1968 he went to the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he completed his habilitation in economics in 1973 and was a visiting scholar with Professor Phelps at Columbia University in New York in 1973/74 .

After a visiting professorship at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (1972–1973) and a teaching position at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (1974), Hoedl was appointed professor of political economy at the University of Kassel in 1975. In 1977 he was appointed professor of economics at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal, which he held until his retirement in 2005. During this time he was visiting professor at the University of Vienna (1978) and has given lectures at the State University of Polygraphy in Moscow and at the State University of Light Industry in Tashkent ( Uzbekistan ).

From 1987 to 1991 Hoedl was Vice Rector and from 1991 to 1999 Rector of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. There he carried out the model tests for financial autonomy and cost accounting and expanded the university to include barracks. From 2000 to 2003, Hödl was rector of the Graz University of Technology , where he expanded the strategic industrial cooperation and, from 2003, he devoted himself to university business cooperation, including the European research programs. Hoedl has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1998 and its vice-president since 2005.

Hödl was also entrusted with various academic functions and tasks. In the seventies and eighties he was on several expert committees for environmental policy and technology design of the German federal government . He was an advisor to the UN conference "Science and Technology for Development" at the governments of the Comoros and Ivory Coast (1978), President of the "Political Economy Working Group" (1984–1987), member of the International Commission and the Senate of the German University Conference ( 1992–1999) and chairman of the “Quality Assessment” working group of the European University Conference (1994–1995) and member of the European University Council “Jean Monnet” (1992–2003). Hoedl was a member of the board of trustees of HIS GmbH (1994–1999), Wuppertal GmbH (1996–2000) and the WDR Broadcasting Council (1996–1999). He was also a member of the monitoring panel for the entire Fourth Research Framework Program (1997–1998) and a member of the Austrian Accreditation Council (2005–2012).
