Erich Kaufmann (singer)
Erich Kaufmann (born November 22, 1908 in Vienna ; † August 22, 1956 there ) was an Austrian opera singer .
Life
The bass Erich Kaufmann received his training in Vienna and began his stage work as a choir singer at the Theater Basel in 1935 . In 1936 he was accepted into the ensemble as a soloist . In the same year Kaufmann went to the theater of Reichenberg . After a successful guest performance, he went to the Vienna Volksoper in 1938 , of which he was a member until his death. There he sang a wide variety of roles, e.g. B .:
- Sarastro in the Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ,
- the Rocco in Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven ,
- the Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai ,
- the Baculus in the Wildschütz by Albert Lortzing ,
- the d'Ursel im Kuhreigen by Wilhelm Kienzl ,
- the Tommaso in the lowlands by Eugen d'Albert ,
- the Ferrando in the troubadour of Giuseppe Verdi
- the king in Verdi's Aida ,
- the Colline in La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini ,
- the sacristan in Puccini's Tosca ,
- the Crespel in Hoffmann's stories by Jacques Offenbach ,
- the Zuniga in Carmen by Georges Bizet as well
- the Kezal in the Bartered Bride by Bedřich Smetana .
In addition, Kaufmann often appeared in operettas (as Zsupán in the Gypsy Baron , as Weps in the bird dealer , as Kagler in Wiener Blut and as Masaccio in Gasparone ). At the Vienna State Opera he gave guest appearances , especially in character roles .
Kaufmann's final resting place is in the Neustifter Friedhof (6-14-21) in Vienna .
