Erich Kaufmann (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erich Kaufmann (born April 7, 1932 in Novi Sad ( Yugoslavia )) is a German architect and urban planner .

Life

As the leading architect of the VEB “Hochbauprojektierung Rostock”, Kaufmann was responsible for a number of urban development projects and large housing estates in Rostock . Mainly prefabricated buildings from the WBS 70 system were used here . The 18-story high-rise windmills are well known . In 1973 he received the GDR National Prize, Second Class for Art and Literature, for his urban, architectural and artistic design of the Lütten Klein project in Rostock.

From 1979 onwards, Erich Kaufmann and Peter Baumbach attempted for the first time in projects in Rostock's old town to adapt buildings from industrial building systems to the historical building fabric. Based on templates from the Vicke-Schorler roll , the five-gabled house was created among other things . By using such references, a kind of corporate identity developed in Rostock , which was only to become common practice in postmodernism much later.

According to Bruno Flierl, Kaufmann is one of the most outstanding architects of the GDR .
